Question:

I'm currently registered with AccessAbility Services for a Disability. I require assistance to take notes at times. Through the AccessAbility Services office, their volunteer note-taker option, no one has signed up yet ... I would like to ask if there is any tips/ideas you may have to help me with this to seek help with notes?

Answer 1:

Hello! Thank you for reaching out to RxPRN. I know this is probably a very stressful time as midterms are fast approaching, so I am very glad you reached out so you can get help to succeed! One suggestion that I have for you, is if you feel comfortable, reach out to your professor asking them if they would put an announcement on LEARN. I know I have seen professors in my classes do this in the past and it may help students see the opportunity. Students may have not applied anymore as they may have thought the position has been filled. If you are not comfortable reaching out to your professor, this is totally ok as I am very nervous to do that as well, I would suggest reaching out to AssessAbility and they may be able to reach out to your professors in a more anonymous way. I am also a note-taker for two of my classes currently and I would be more than happy to help you out! I am currently a student in 2A so if you are in the same classes as me, I would be more than happy to help you if I can! If you feel comfortable reaching out to me personally, you can fill out the google form (the link is copied) and request to meet with me. My name is Brooke and I would be happy to meet with you!

Thank you for reaching out to us! I am also registered with Accessibility so you are not alone!

I’m sorry that no one has reached out to you and volunteered to be a notetaker. I can imagine how that may make you feel unsupported and I know it takes a lot of courage to ask for assistance.

Here are my suggestions regarding what you can do:

  1. If you are comfortable with it, reach out to a peer in your class (someone you trust) and ask them to ask them to reach out to the class as a whole (perhaps through Discord or whatever your class uses as a platform). This can sometimes feel more personal than a mass email sent through the Accessibility Services and perhaps one of your classmates would like to help you out.

  2. If you have a relationship with your professors, you could also reach out to them. I’m sure many of them would jump on the opportunity to help you find someone. Maybe if you know of someone in your class that takes really good notes, they could reach out to that specific person on your behalf?

  3. I know curriculum changes, but upper years can also be a really good resource. I have landed on some notes myself just by reaching out to someone in the year above me.

  4. I know it can be difficult at times to be vulnerable and let everyone know that you need some help, but I think reaching out yourself (either through discord, or class email) to say that you haven’t yet received this service because no one in the class has volunteered may serve as the final push that some people need to volunteer. Maybe you could specify that you would welcome notes from multiple people (maybe one person does notes for one class and another for another class --may take some pressure off the notetakers!)

  5. My final suggestion would be to get in touch with Becky or Kaitlyn. I have received some great support from them and they really know a lot of the students personally. They would be a great resource to help you find someone I’m sure.

These are all things I’m aware you may have already tried! So if that is the case, feel free to reach out to me and I’ll see if I can get more creative! My name is Jill and I’m in 2A right now.

I’m sorry to hear that nobody has signed up as a notetaker, this must be very frustrating and stressful. My initial thought would be to reach out to your classmates through either email or another server that your class uses to keep in contact. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, you could potentially contact your SOPHS class representative and they could reach out to your classmates so you can stay anonymous. Perhaps some of your peers missed seeing that a notetaker was needed, or they figured someone else would volunteer so they didn’t feel the need to share their notes. Additionally, maybe your peers did not originally feel comfortable sharing their notes, but when they see that one of their classmates is needing help, they will feel better about sharing them. I think a message coming from either yourself (if you feel comfortable) or someone else in the class (such as your class rep), might be a good place to start in seeking help. Pharmacy school is tough, and I know it can be hard asking for help, but you are not alone in this.
