Question:
I find that I study best in the morning, which means getting up pretty early (I go to bed quite early as well). The only problem is that I start to lose all motivation at 3 or 4pm and get easily distracted (cleaning, zoning out while reading notes, email) until I go to bed. Any tips on how to stay motivated and focused for longer?
Thanks!
Response 1:
Early bird? It's great that you've recognized your strengths and are using that to your advantage! Are you taking any breaks from studying? For me, zoning out means that I'm due for a break. And if I force myself then just I’m just wasting time. An important thing to remember is that your body can teach you a lot about yourself. Take frequent small breaks in between all your study sessions. Also have planned activities in between studying. An episode of Breaking Bad/Orange is the New Black (whatever suits your fancy) is a great way to deload for a set amount of time!
A consistent schedule is good, which means planning meals and making healthy foods. Your brain requires a lot of energy, and high sugar meals/snacks will only help for so long.
Don’t push yourself too hard, I would never survive multiple days of studying for hours on hours. Reward yourself frequently and you’ll find a groove soon enough.
Response 2:
It helps to take planned breaks while you study to keep yourself motivated. Make a schedule of what you plan to study that day and make sure to include breaks and meals! During breaks, you can incorporate some exercise and stretches to keep yourself active. You lose productivity by just sitting all day. It also helps to go to a “study environment” like the library. If you want to stay home, try to study outside of your bedroom since your bed and belongings can be distracting.
