Question:
Do you guys have any tips for co-op applications? What should I think about when applying? How can I do better in interviews?
Response 1:
Co-op applications are an exciting time to see what jobs are offered to pharmacy students. When applying to a posting, make sure you have a genuine interest in the position. Ask yourself why you want to apply, as employers want to know why you are specifically interested in their position. In preparation for an interview, make a list of all the qualifications or qualities you possess that would be applicable to the job. Employers are not only interested in what experiences you have to bring to the job, but are also curious about your interpersonal qualities such as ability to work in a team.
For the interview part in particular, I would recommend you research the company you are applying for. This will allow you to determine how you will fit into the company’s culture. You can come up with a list of potential questions, and have answers prepared to guide you during an interview. You can practice interview skills with classmates, or using the resources offered by the university. Most importantly, be yourself during an interview, and be genuine with your responses. Have a good night’s sleep before interviews and present yourself professionally during the interview. Enjoy your upcoming co-op term!
Response 2:
In my opinion, resumes are very important in any job application. A lot of times, employers will first glance at applicants’ resume before looking at their marks and cover letters; especially when there are many applicants applying. Resumes do not have to be too long or too detailed as long as they are concise enough. You should elaborate on your skills and experience in cover letters instead. It is important to talk about your soft skills (e.g. interprofessional skills) in your cover letter as well, since most pharmacy-related jobs require good communication and teamwork spirit.
Many people find interviews to be “scary” and intimidating. Try not to be nervous and stay calm during interviews. Show your confidence to the employers! You could always practice a few times with your friends or even on your own. There are no right or wrong answers, the employers just want to see the way you present yourself. Don’t overstress and worry too much. You guys will do great!
